Promoting Dual Careers – Better Together

Dual Career Netzwerk Ruhr (DCN Ruhr) assists partners of newly appointed members of academic staff in navigating career options in the Ruhr area, in order to increase the likelihood of a successful job search in the region. To this end, 20 research, economic and administrative institutions in the region have joined forces. Mercator Foundation provides start-up support for the development of DNC Ruhr, and the Network is coordinated by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR).
Important notes for Dual Career Couples
DCN Ruhr won’t be able to provide a job placement guarantee. DCN Ruhr services can be commissioned solely through the academic institutions participating in the Network, which have prepared a profile form to be filled out by candidates seeking academics appointments.
Objectives of the Network cooperation
The regional cooperation aims first and foremost at recruiting and retaining talent. The project thus strives to boost the region’s competitive advantage on an international level and to promote equal opportunities and family-friendly practices in the research and economic hub Ruhr.

Joint statement on DCN Ruhr by the Network partners
We, the universities affiliated in University Alliance Ruhr (UA Ruhr), i.e. Ruhr-Universität Bochum, TU Dortmund and University of Duisburg-Essen, as well as FernUniversität in Hagen, Bochum University of Applied Sciences, Hochschule für Gesundheit, Technische Hochschule Georg Agricola, the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Rhineland-Westphalia-Lippe, Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts, Westphalian University of Applied Sciences, the German Mining Museum in Bochum, the Dortmund-based science network windo, the Max-Planck-Institute Dortmund and the Hochschule Ruhr West are aware that dual careers play a crucial role in the recruitment of excellent researchers. Dual Career Couples is a term coined for couples where both partners have enjoyed a very good education, share the same career-focused mindset and pursue individual careers. Consequently, if one partner changes their workplace and place or residence, the question of the other partner’s career outlook, as well as of the reconciliation of work and family life, must be addressed.
We intend to face this challenge with a strong regional Network:
Together with Regional Association Ruhr, Business Metropole Ruhr GmbH, the Chambers of Commerce and Industry in the Ruhr area, Initiativkreis Ruhr, Bochum Office of Economic Development, Economic Development Agency Dortmund, EWG Essen Economic Development Agency, and TechnologieZentrumDortmund, we wish to promote the economic and science hub Ruhr Metropolis as a strong competitor on a global level. In the regional Network, the Ruhr’s full potential and the professional development opportunities associated with it can be optimally used to nurture dual careers. Under the umbrella of the DNC project, Mercator Foundation provides start-up support for the development of the Network, which is coordinated by the Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR). In the course of the project, the undersigned will be developing transparent and consistent processes to support dual career couples. The Network and its affiliated institutions will thus visibly increase the Ruhr’s appeal for dual career couples. With its open structure, Dual Career Network Ruhr invites other regional organisations in the fields of economics, science and administration to likewise sign the statement. Dual Career Services and Family Services that provide advice and hands-on assistance have already been implemented in several of the participating academic institutions. The undersigned intend to set up and successively expand support and consultancy services on location. The academic institutions represented in the Network will be assessing the viability of either providing their own services in-house or of participating in joint local services. In the long term, sustainable structures between the fields of economics, science and administration are to be developed, in order to ensure efficient support of dual career couples.
